Why should we learn Chemistry?

Have you ever wondered about the importance of chemistry in our daily life? You might ask yourself this question if you are studying chemistry. If you have to love something it should be valuable. You will love chemistry if you know its importance.

From early times, efforts were made by human beings to systematize knowledge and to understand the various phenomena occurring in nature. This created a scientific temper and gradually science emerged as a discipline. As the quantum of knowledge increased we have different branches of science like physics, biology, geology etc., and chemistry is at the forefront. In fact, chemistry is very fundamental and overlaps with all branches of science and helps in improving the physical quality of life. The economic development of a country depends on its chemical industries.

What is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the composition, structure, properties and changes that matter undergoes. It is the art of making matter that never existed before.  Every day we need new and better materials to improve our lives and the answer is given by none other than a chemist. Chemistry is art, it is engineering, it is architecture and what not.

Importance of Chemistry

If PHYSICS is the philosophy of science, if MATHEMATICS is the language of science, then CHEMISTRY is the real life of science.

From dawn to dusk, the various materials you use such as your tooth brush, toothpaste, soap, detergents, dyes, drugs, alloys, metals, fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides, the food we eat, other health care products are all contributions of chemistry.

All the materials that contribute to your comfort, all medicines that cure your ailments are all contributions of chemists. For example, the medicine we use. Cisplatin and taxol are two important medicines used in Cancer therapy. AZT (Azidothymidine) is used to help AIDS victims. These are isolated either from plants or animals or are synthesized chemically.

Currently, you hear a lot about developing a medicine for COVID. You hear about Dexamethasone, Hydroxychloroquin etc. If these or any other drug has to be synthesised, the final key is with a chemist.

In spite of the great many contributions of chemistry, chemistry and many of its versatile products are considered to cause pollution. It has to be understood in this regard that, it is not these materials that pollute, but the people who use it.  Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) were widely used as refrigerants, but are known to cause ozone layer depletion. Safer alternatives to this has been developed and more research is required for developing smart and ecofriendly materials.   This throws a challenge to younger generation of scientists and I hope that your chemistry lessons will ignite the fire in young learners to opt for a career in chemistry.
